SHRUBS AND GROUND COVERS
American Cranberrybush 'Baily's Compactum' Round-topped, dense, fast growing plant. Great for naturalizing, hardy and strong flowering. Showy white blooms in late May. Produces profuse red fruit that attracts birds and other wildlife. Attractive red fall foliage.
Bearberry Excellent low growing evergreen ground cover suitable for difficult sites. White flowers bloom in spring. Bronze fall foliage and red berries in winter add interest. Does best in sandy well-drained soil; salt and wind tolerant. Low maintenance! See USDA fact sheet for more info.
Blueberry, Highbush Upright, spreading, multi-stemmed shrub with four season interest. Blooms spring through summer. Edible berries ripen July-August. Foliage yellow-red-burgundy in fall, bark is red or yellow-green in winter. See USDA fact sheet and USDA plant guide for more info.
Blueberry, Lowbush Showy flowers produce edible dark blue berries mid-summer. Glossy, deep green leaves turn scarlet burgundy in fall. Excellent selection for borders or naturalizing.

Cinquefoil, Three-toothed Spreading evergreen ground cover with glossy dark green leaves that turn red in fall. Clusters of dainty white flowers provide nectar to bees, butterflies, and insects. Good for sandy/rocky soil.
Cranberry, Creeping Excellent low growing evergreen ground cover, especially for damp sites and near salt water. Tiny leaves on many stems spread rapidly; green leaves in summer turn mahogany red in fall. Edible red berries in fall add to plant's beauty. Very hardy!
Creeping Juniper Compact evergreen ground cover with flat, trailing branches. Intense silver-blue foliage is light purple in winter. Excellent for mass planting as turf substitute; rock gardens and overhanging rock ledges; and erosion control on light to moderate slopes. Heat and drought tolerant; resistant to salt damage. Grows well in almost any well-drained soil.
Elderberry 'Adams' Very attractive plant with dense round form, deep green foliage, and profuse flattened heads of creamy white flowers in spring that attract butterflies. Fothergilla (aka Witchalder) 'Mt. Airy' The showy shrub has a dense, upright form, dark blue-green foliage, and produces profuse, bottle-brush spikes of fragrant white flowers in May. Leaves turn orange-red in fall. Good for borders or foundations.

Mountain Laurel The CT State Flower! Slow growing, very hardy evergreen with striking clustered flowers. Good for massing and borders.
Northern Bayberry Semi-evergreen aromatic shrub with shiny foliage and waxy blue berries that attract birds. Quick spreading; good for massing or as a hedge. Tolerates salt and poor sandy soil; does well in seashore conditions. Extremely hardy! See USDA fact sheet for more info.
Oakleaf Hydrangea 'Snow Queen' Excellent plant for borders or massing with year-round interest. Creamy white panicle flowers contrast with large dark green oak-like leaves in summer. Foliage turns glowing red in fall. Cinammon colored exfoliating bark and orange buds add winter interest. Great cut flowers. Cold-hardy!
Pinxterbloom Azalea This deciduous azalea is densely branched, with lovely green leaves and fragrant, trumpet-shaped sweetly scented pale pink flowers in spring. In fall the foliage turns a pretty soft red, orange and yellow. A terrific choice for naturalizing in moister areas, though also well adapted to drier, rocky soils. Very hardy!

Red Osier Dogwood Best known for its showy bright red stems in winter, this Red Twig dogwood also produces white berries in summer, and has great red-purple fall color. Likes moisture, but very adaptable and tolerates poor soils. Great for massing. Very hardy! See USDA fact sheet for more info.
Spicebush Wonderful broad, rounded multi-stemmed shrub covered with fragrant yellow flowers along branches in early spring before leaves emerge. Aromatic light green leaves turn yellow-gold in fall. Summersweet (aka Sweet Pepperbush) 'Hummingbird' Compact, dense selection of Clethra with lustrous dark green foliage and abundant long very fragrant flower spikes that attract butterflies and bees. Good bright yellow show of fall color. Great in naturalized landscape. Salt tolerant. See USDA fact sheet for more info.
Swamp Azalea Tough, winter hardy deciduous azalea, which produces eye-catching abundant fragrant white blooms in summer that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. These multi-stemmed shrubs also put on a fall show with their flame red foliage. Good for naturalizing stream or pond edges, or grouping on the edge of wooded areas.
Sweetfern Not a fern! This low spreading shrub has gray-green aromatic fern-like leaves. Birch-like catkins hang down in spring. Fall color is burnt orange. Good for erosion control; tolerates infertile soil. Very hardy and drought tolerant.
Virginia Rose Great wildlife plant! Easy to grow, spreading shrub with dense foliage that provides good cover. Highly fragrant pink-yellow flowers June to August attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Bright red rose hips mature in fall and provide winter food for birds and other wildlife. Winterberry, female 'Kennebago' Another great wildlife plant! Deciduous holly with deep green lustrous foliage spreads to form multi-stemmed thickets that provide good cover for birds. Winterberry, male 'Southern Gentleman' Deciduous holly with deep green lustrous foliage spreads to form multi-stemmed thickets. Pollinates females (see above), which produce bright red, persistent berries in winter. Only one male is needed to pollinate many female bushes planted nearby. Good for naturalizing.
Witchhazel Fast growing multi-stemmed shrub with all season beauty. In spring, blueish green foliage emerges with a bronze tinge. Foliage darkens through summer, then dark green leaves turn showy buttercup yellow in fall. After losing its leaves in late October, small, spicy scented, spidery yellow flowers bloom, enlivening the autumn landscape. Makes a great border plant.
FLOWERING PERENNIALS-FERNS-GRASSES
Columbine Red and yellow nodding flowers bloom for many weeks in spring. Good choice for shade, woodland and rock gardens, and naturalized areas. Very hardy and regenerates readily by seed. Attracts butterflies, bumblebees and hummingbirds. See USDA fact sheet for more info.
Coreopsis 'Golden Showers' Excellent performer, easy to maintain, exceptionally vigorous. Flowers form upright, airy clumps of fine needle-like foliage that are long-lived. Drought tolerant once established.
Creeping Phlox 'Osborne's White' Rapid grower. Makes a good groundcover in shade gardens. Fragrant pure white flowers bloom in spring and attract butterflies.
Northern Blue Flag Very robust, dramatic display of boldly veined, sword-like leaves with large, violet-blue flowers. Produces 3 to 5 flowers per stalk in spring. Great plant beside a pond in the transition area between water and land. See USDA fact sheet for more info.
Obedient Plant 'Vivid' Great cut flower! Strong grower. Drought resistant. Compact form with dense spikes of rose-pink tubular flowers.
Swamp Milkweed Swamp milkweed has big heads of rose pink, sweetly vanilla scented flowers. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, and is the host and nectar plant for monarch butterflies. Grows naturally in wet soil but also does well in regular garden soil.
Lady Fern 'Lady in Red' Hardy, easy grower found in meadows, moist woods, along streams, and in rock crevices. Vibrant burgundy stems contrast nicely with light-green lacy fronds. New England Wildflower Society introduction.
Marginal Woodfern Attractive and sturdy evergreen fern. Prefers rich woodlands, rocky slopes or outcroppings. Gray-green leathery fronds provide winter interest.
Little Bluestem 'Prairie Blues' The bluest foliage of any Little Bluestem cultivar, showy through the seasons. Fluffy, silver seed heads emerge late summer-fall. In fall, the narrow upright foliage turns gold and red. Good for naturalizing. Stunning display when mass planted, undulating in the breeze. See USDA fact sheet for more info.
Switchgrass 'Ruby Ribbons' Exciting new switchgrass cultivar developed by UConn. Soft blue-green foliage with red overtones emerges in spring, and turns dramatic deep wine-red in late summer/fall. Flowerheads appear late summer, and ornamental seedheads provide winter interest. Plant in groups for dramatic effect! See USDA fact sheet for more info.
BARE ROOT TREE SEEDLINGS
Douglas Fir Large evergreen tree with conical form. Excellent Xmas tree, or shade or lawn tree. Moderate to rapid growth. Needles short, soft, spirally-arranged, with blue-green to gray-green color. Bark smooth on young trunks; reddish brown ridges with age. Not for dry or poorly drained sites. Dislikes high winds.
Eastern Red Cedar Fast growing pyramid-shape evergreen with flat needles. Gnarled fluted trunk and gray to red-brown bark of ornamental interest. Prickly foliage is browse resistant. Good for specimen trees, masses, screens, windbreaks or hedges, and difficult sites. Attracts songbirds, butterflies, small mammals.
Eastern White Pine Rapid grower with broad pyramid to dense column-like shape. Thin soft needles are light green with a bluish cast. Smooth gray to gray-green bark, becomes furrowed with age. Very versatile; use as an ornamental, Xmas tree or windbreak. Good specimen for parks or other large spaces. Easily transplanted and grown, but not tolerant of strong winds, salt, and vulnerable to ice/heavy snows.
White Spruce Fast growing, very hardy compact tree with narrow, conical form. Needles are short, 4-sided stiff pointed blue-green needles. Good for Xmas trees or ornamentals; in windbreaks, screens, hedges, and mass plantings; and along the seashore, due to salt tolerance.
